357 people with outstanding bench warrants from North Las Vegas Municipal Court are back in good standing with the Court after a pre-holiday warrant quashing event held in December by the North Las Vegas CARE (Community Approach to Rehabilitation and Engagement) Court.
Court staff resolved most of the bench warrants remotely, although some required a brief court appearance. Participants had payment plans reactivated or made other arrangements with the Court. None are at risk any longer of arrest due to a prior traffic warrant. In total, more than 600 people contacted the Court in response to this event.
“The CARE Court, in just a matter of months, has already benefited hundreds of people and is breaking down barriers to success for North Las Vegas residents,” Chief Judge Chris Lee said. “A minor traffic infraction or the inability to pay a fine shouldn’t prevent someone from getting a job or an apartment.”
The warrant quashing event is part of the City of North Las Vegas’ larger rehabilitative justice efforts. In July 2020, the City opened the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center with an emphasis on treatment and programming to address the root causes of crime and reduce recidivism. This spring, North Las Vegas Municipal Court opened the CARE Court, which works with the CCC to offer diversionary programs focused on the rehabilitation of those accused of low-level offenses. The CARE Court includes a number of specialty court programs in one courtroom.
The Court held a similar warrant quashing event for 100 participants in the spring.
