Late last year I started to seriously compare the policy statements of the numerous presidential candidates. I needed to get past the adjectives. It was a daunting task. The “sound bites” that are in video ads are not comprehensive and unfortunately the debates do not allow enough time for details. So I was on my own.
What Donald Trump was advancing convincingly resonated with me. (I changed my party affiliation so I could caucus for Mr. Trump.) But I wanted persuasive specifics to counter the claims and personal attacks
of supporters of the many other candidates. Fortunately, the short and much longer versions on the DonaldJTrump.com website helped me extract Mr. Trump’s positions. I was not satisfied with my disordered enumeration.
Then I received an email that enclosed about 20 Trump positions in about the detail I wanted. Its heading inferred that the article was from the previous weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal.
The title: “Trump — Things You Might Not Know About Him” was spot on.
The Byline was ascribed to Peggy Noonan (a conservative Republican and author of multiple books).
The opening paragraphs were a bit more positive toward The Donald than I would expect from Ms. Noonan. Also based on my years in DC, the closing was also something I wouldn’t have anticipated from the sometimes Washington pundit. There was a hint that the article wasn’t in the WSJ and Ms. Noonan didn’t write it. (It wasn’t and she didn’t.)
After tracking down a copy of that most recent (9 January) weekend edition of the WSJ and confirming for myself that the crediting was bogus, I researched the genesis of the “Trump – Things You Might Not Know About Him” article.
Most of the 20 points in the article were just about what I had gleaned from DonaldJTrump.com. Some were more detailed than others.
Number 16 simply states: “Trump is pro 2nd Amendment rights” while DonaldJTrump.com contains five pages delineating Mr. Trump’s position on “The Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”
It seems that not too many weeks after Donald John Trump Sr. declared he was officially running for President of the United States, unknown supporters outlined his positions on these 20 topics. Nearly identical versions of the text recently attributed to Noonan were circulated in early August of 2015. One posting can be found in the comments section of a “Washington Times” article dated 8 August or one can use “Google” to find and read the full text.
Since I am a veteran I read with interest the 4-1/2 pages on DonaldJTrump.com regarding reforming the VA. Trump states that veterans will get the care they need wherever and whenever they need it with better support for women veterans and the “absolutely unacceptable” VA will be fixed — fast.
Trump wants a radical change to the tax system to not only make it better for average Americans, but also to encourage businesses to stay here and foreign businesses to move here. Five pages of details are at DonaldJTrump.com. That site also includes over five pages on immigration reform.
Mr. Trump states: “I love America. And when you love something, you protect it passionately — fiercely, even.” Being consistent, of late we hear why The Donald is “angry.” So am I; and that’s one of the reasons I will definitely caucus for him on the 23rd of February.
