Mob Museum announces improvement project
The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces plans to make substantial capital improvements to the Museum beginning in early 2017. This improvement project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018. While construction is underway, the Museum will remain open.
The Mob Museum contracted with LGA Architects, a Las Vegas-based architecture firm and Gallagher & Associates, the internationally renowned exhibit design firm, to assist in designing the project.
Improvements will encompass additional exhibits, interactive venues and a brand-new integrated retail and food service experience developed with the Museum’s long-term partner Event Network.
Listed on the Nevada and National Register of Historic Places, the Museum has assembled experts including Robert Chattel of Chattel, Inc., Historic Preservation Consultants, who served on the Museum’s original development team.
Together, the project team will honor the historic nature of the building and ensure the project abides by local, state and federal historic preservation requirements. Renovations will affect the Museum’s basement level, which currently houses administrative offices, as well as the first level. A sample of the new exhibits and experiences includes:
Organized Crime Today
Featuring artifacts, graphics and a large interactive, wall-sized touchscreen, this exhibit will tell the story of what organized crime looks like in the 21st century—and how law enforcement has adapted to combat it. Exhibits and corresponding digital content on the Museum’s website (themobmuseum.org) will be regularly updated to reflect the latest global organized crime developments.
The Crime Lab
The Crime Lab offers guests a hands-on exploration of forensic science and investigative techniques. Up to 15 guests will participate in the 30-minute facilitated experience guided by a Museum educator and engage in interactive activities while they learn about various methods of forensic criminal investigation, including DNA analysis, fingerprinting, cause of death and ballistics testing.
Firearms Training Simulator
The firearms training simulator will provide Museum guests with a visceral understanding of the real-life challenges law enforcement officers face when they encounter situations that may require use of deadly force. This training is similar to the training that law enforcement agencies experience. Scenarios will replicate a specific situation law enforcement officers face in the line of duty.
Expanded Retail and Dining
A much larger retail area will be integrated with a new food and beverage service venue. While guests shop and eat, they will also be able to view exhibits and enjoy periodic programming reflecting four distinct themes: The Prohibition Era, Pop Culture and the Mob, Food and the Mob and Vintage Las Vegas.
Additional exhibits and experiences will be announced in coming months.
“We are eager to reinvest in our future growth and create exciting new ways to advance our mission and positively impact the community,” explained Jonathan Ullman, executive director and chief executive officer. “This improvement project will result in enhanced guest amenities and an even richer exhibit experience, ensuring that we remain a first-class Museum for years to come. With these efforts, we expect to increase the Museum’s reach, delivering hundreds of thousands of guests each year, many millions of dollars of economic impact, and a spotlight that keeps shining on downtown Las Vegas.”
