For five decades, Bob Hope made the rounds of armed force bases around the world to entertain the troops. Called the “greatest entertainer of the 20th century”, Bob Hope’s career on Broadway, radio, movies and television.
With such a dynamic, universally loved man, Bob Hope shared his talent every year for five decades by bringing shows to the troops no matter where they were located. Bob and his stars even appeared on battleships, and battlefields, yes battlefields, into the heat of action.
This film highlights “Bob Hope’s Christmas Special: Around the World with the 1969 USO” 16-day tour to Germany, Italy, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Guam, on board the USS Ranger and the USS Sanctuary.
He brought beautiful women, talented men, specialty acts, singers, dancers Some of the cast included Suzanne Charny, Teresa Graves, Dolores Hope, Miss World Eve Rueber-Staier, Romy Schneider, Connie Stevens, The Golddiggers, The Pierro Brothers, Les Brown and his Band of Renown, Neil Armstrong- the and even Neil Armstrong- the first man on the moon and more.
Bob’s group began with their first stop at the White House with President and Mrs. Nixon’s party as they awaited the show. Without rehearsals, Bob and his “all-star show” wowed the party then rushed to their private plane. This is the type of meaningful “giving” Bob Hope devoted throughout his colorful career.
The public loved Bob’s “Road” film series with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour: “Road to Rio”, “Road to Bali”, “Road to Singapore”, “Road to Hong Kong”, “Road to Morocco”, “Road to Zanzibar”, “Road to Utopia” and more. These are said to be more than comedies, a satire of popular film genres of the day- jungle, Arabian nights, Alaskan adventure and spy films.
On May 10, Time Life®, creator and direct marketer of unique music and home entertainment products, announced BOB HOPE: ENTERTAINING THE TROOPS, a single DVD featuring three TV Christmas Specials: a rare, never-before-released 1951 special from The Korean War Era , along with shows from 1970 and 1971 – two of the most-watched shows in TV history! Featuring Hope’s hilarious monologues and guest stars aplenty, these shows prove that laughter is truly the best medicine, regardless of the time zone or terrain. With this DVD release, Hope’s fans will enjoy more than two and a half hours of Hope’s house calls across three special troop shows.
