The press and VIP’s were invited to meet Korean sculptor Wook Jang Cheung and view his exhibit in the Shop at Crystals.
Las Vegans have many opportunities to experience the latest art and sculptures but theses sculptures were different.
When you first see Cheung’s work, it is not the typical sculptures usually seen in an art gallery. His sculptures tower 10 feet above you and appear to be reaching for the sky.
It takes a few minutes to identify the animal in each sculpture, to visually trace the lines of the elephants, deer, polar bears and camel’s bodies.
The animal’s long thin legs rise to the body. Using stainless steel sculptures is more durable for collectors.
Walk around and experience the surreal feeling of the exhibit.
Some people have a plan in their life and Cheung’s brought him around the world.
He created a message, the journey a person takes to reach their goals. Cheung had faith in his work and recommends others attempt their own journey.
Cheung explained his sculptures, “Statues stand; I want my work to be in motion, to connote the journey. These figures gaze out at an unseen destination that is beyond our horizon.”
Cheung’s exhibit was curated by Dr. Laura Henkel of Sin City Gallery in Las Vegas and Shunmei Jin of JSM Art in China. His work was brought to Las Vegas through the facilitation of Viva Tours.
Dr. Henkel felt, “Cheung’s expansion of form is fluid and elegant. The stainless steel pieces represent strength and endurance.
The Long Journey’ easily resonates in each of us, at any time and any given places, as we all yearn to reach a destination.
For the artist, the variety in forms represents life as a metaphor. The road is a representative model.
He opens the road to life through his sculptures. As journeys do to us, roads, too, can lead us to a model of life.”
The exhibit is called “The Long Journey,” as a reference to Cheung’s own trips to exhibit his work for 13 solo shows and more than 100 group exhibitions. His art was displayed from Japan to Korea, Italy and the United States.
After the exhibit, invited guests were served hors d’oeuvres at Social House.
Wook Jang Cheung’s unique exhibit is scheduled to appear from September 15 to October 13 in The Shops at Crystals, 3720 S. Las Vegas Boulevard, next to Aria Hotel in City Center. www.wookjangcheung.com
