Any parent who has spent their time watching a school board’s interaction with the governor will have detected that both are completely and totally controlled by the Democratic Party principles. Sandoval’s credentials as a RINO, when it comes to education, came out of the closet full force during 2010 when he rescued RINO Terri Janison from the Clark County School District (CCSD) school board presidency, hiring her for his Southern Nevada office staff. Now that this hindsight is working in the public’s favor, voters can simply compare Democratic Party policies to the outcomes that we have, and it is imminently apparent that school choice for kids outside the jurisdiction of the teachers union was never the plan.
During the 2015 legislature the Southern Nevada corporate media reported that there was a compromise between the governor and Democrats regarding improvements in education.
On the D’s side, it was a clean sweep, tax increases and rapid funding for unneeded school construction and more. On the Republican side, corporate media claimed a hearing and review process that would break up the Clark County School District, which is notorious for bad education, and the opportunity for parents to opt out of CCSD and get a part of the state public education funding for their kid’s non-public education costs. Later this program became known as the ESA program.
Followers of the system would no more believe that Sandoval would agree to those two things then would Harry Reid, the puppet master of all Nevada RINOS, himself. Sandoval, a former judge of the United States District Court for the District of Nevada at the time that he signed the legislation could see then as clearly as we can now, that the way the legislation was written was ripe for being blocked in court. The school district ‘breakup’ has now turned in to the commonly used government tactic of a “Reorganization” that leads nowhere. To understand how this is rationalized, the Democrats think that their need to stay in power is ‘For the kids.’ And that is the only end result (so far) coming out of the last legislature that can, in hindsight, be rationalized as being for the kids.
If you want to know the answer to anything in Nevada Politics, follow the money. Money is power. It must be doled out in big doses to pull the strings of power. It’s not enough to continue to protect the teachers union and build more schools to hire more teachers who become paying members and get brainwashed to support the D party. Examples of flagrant waste include CCSD has dropped the process of bidding contractors to get the lowest construction bid on new schools. CCSD went into full panic spending to build schools by paying COST PLUS.
(Called CMAR by the school board. But without contractor risk due to CCSD paying BIG money in extras to contractors.) This also helps them steer contracts onto design professionals who donate to the party and individuals.
What the D party does best over rewarding its friends is to punish its enemies. On the private education side, private non-religious schools are scared to commit suicide by building facilities when politics has yanked the funding rug out from under them multiple times. Parents who subjected their kids to the punishment of CCSD mandated minimum number of attendance days in order to qualify for the program were again discouraged by the program’s failure to get off the ground due to court challenges over and over. Now direct national attacks by the Obama administration against for-profit private education (Example: ITT Tech) further work to discourage private investment in school facilities.
The ESA program will eventually be a great win, win, win plan on behalf of tax payers and students. ESA’s help students opt out of our worst in the nation public education system and pay for quality education elsewhere. It lowers the cost of education to taxpayers and increases funding for students that remain in public education. While NPRI and other organizations are pushing for success, RINO Sandoval serves his RINO plans best by letting time do all of the damage that it can to ESA’s.
And that is obviously his plan.
