on October 9, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was well known in the Cuban community of Las Vegas as Rosita.
Forty-four years ago, Rosita and her husband Gabriel started “Gabriel
Jewelers” at the old Commercial Center on East Sahara Avenue. A family
business not only patronized by the Cubans of Las Vegas but by many
others that appreciate good jewelry and the best of service.
Rosita was always there to welcome clients with her famous broad smile
that made everyone feel at home. The business expanded rapidly and
soon Rosita and Gabriel, along with their son Gaby, opened their
second location on Tropicana and Eastern Avenue; that was soon
followed by their third, in Henderson.
In addition to her success in the business world, people also knew
Rosita because of her two brothers, Valentin and Rogelio (Papito)
Valentin worked at Caesars Palace as a dealer for more than 40 years
and was — and still is — highly respected in the gaming industry and
by everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him. Papito, a friend
to all, has also worked shoulder to shoulder at Gabriel Jewelers in
Her only daughter, Maylene De Leon, preceded Rosita in death. Rosita
proved through her entire life to be a woman of great self-possession,
having suffered with an incredible firmness the loss of her daughter
at the tender age of 17.
Rosita is survived by her husband of 58 years, Gabriel De Leon; son,
Gabriel (Gaby) De Leon; three grandchildren, Chelsey, Brandon and
Chandler De Leon; and her two brothers, Valentin and Rogelio (Papito)
Although gone, Rosita will never be forgotten. We offer our deepest
condolences to the De Leon and Jodra families.
