A man visiting the Mexican Consulate parked his truck in a reserved parking space and when the tow truck arrived to hookup the violator’s vehicle to tow it away, the man pulled out a crowbar and tried to attack the tow truck driver.
The driver, with Red Rock Towing, feared for his life and pulled a gun on the parking violator; in a matter of minutes five patrol cars were at the front door of the Mexican Consulate.
A man dressed in blue, who declined to give his name, told the Las Vegas Tribune that when he saw the tow truck driver pulling out a gun, he immediately jumped the fence and tried to calm everyone down to avoid worse consequences.
When officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrived, they took over the situation and worked diligently to avoid major consequences.
The visitor to the Las Vegas office of the Mexican Consulate from our neighbor state of Utah was handcuffed and pulled aside by one Metro officer while a bilingual female officer took a statement from the female companion of the Utah man in handcuffs.
The tow truck driver, who was visibly upset with the altercation, told the Las Vegas Tribune that he feared for his life when he saw the man, who was extremely aggressive, come toward him with the crowbar, and then drew his weapon.
“I am not interested in having anyone arrested; he can pay for my tow and he can be on his way,” said the tow truck driver, who gave his first name as Karl.
The female police officer communicated to the family of the man what Karl had just said while another police officer holding the Utah man explained that the towing company was not interested in seeing him go to jail; but he has a choice of either going to jail or paying the towing company. The man opted for paying.
A neighbor in the area told the newspaper that situations like the one last Monday morning are very common because people do not like to obey the “Do not park” sign posted in almost every parking lot near the Mexican Consulate, and when they see the tow truck they run to move their vehicle.
Another eyewitness explained that it is not that they cannot read the English language sign because “they learn English very fast when they see the tow truck, because they don’t want to put money in the parking meters on Sixth Street, right behind the consulate building.”
