I know I am old, but not only am I old, I am also very old-fashioned. In the old days, before emails, before twitter or any of these new so-called commodities, there was a telephone and most people have at one time or another owned one, subscribed to one or knew how to use one.
I am also spoiled because people I like, people I admire, people I respect, people that are in a higher position than me, people that are much more important than me, like former Mayor Oscar Goodman, still return my telephone calls.
Before he became the most popular and most likable mayor — during his three terms as mayor — and after he became a private citizen again, as well as the husband of the current Las Vegas mayor, Oscar Goodman always returned my telephone calls and I always asked myself this: if the most popular human being in our city, the most influential political figure in this town can recognize me and return my telephone calls, why does no one else do the same?
Yes, I know that attorneys in Las Vegas are well above being well known for not returning telephone calls, but I can understand that because they are not holding that nasty reputation because they are important; they unfairly hold that nasty reputation because they are not that important and they have to be out there trying to raise money to be able to live above their means; that is why there are so many attorneys that get in trouble with the law — either for thinking that they can commit fraud by short-selling the house they bought, knowing that they could not afford it, or by getting involved with HOA frauds.
Someone I know and who on many occasions haven’t seen eye-to-eye with on certain subjects, and who says that that is just part of doing business because maybe tomorrow we’ll agree with each other and work on the same program like champions — and since we are the closest of friends ever, he told me that Steve Forsythe is a good guy, that he is a gentleman, but I could disagree with that opinion because I called Mr. Forsythe twice, not once but twice, about two months ago and I am still waiting for one of those two telephone calls to be returned.
I say I could disagree with that opinion and that is because I could excuse his lack of finesse because I have the feeling that he is being poisoned against me by someone who cannot handle the truth, someone who seems to be as close to him as she is to anyone else that is in the same business she wants to be in.
I say that “I have the feeling” because no one is man enough to admit to the sad truth that she is against me for speaking my mind and saying publicly what I think is my right while I am a resident of this almost-free country.
What happens is very simple: people give everyone their rights under the Constitution as long as those rights are in favor of their cause and if they are about something they can agree with; and those who are in politics may think they need to agree with her just to be on the good side of Mr. Forsythe.
I have asked City Council Stavros Anthony and my friend City Council Bob Beers if there is any specific person who keeps them shying away from our place despite the fact that we are supporting them, endorsing them and taking sides with them by having yard signs in front of two of my businesses — and in two of the places I live, plus a bumper sticker on my truck, and they both denied such a person (or reason) exists and discounted my suspicions; but the day I find someone with the pants to admit to it, I will blast her name all over this newspaper.
I don’t care if Mr. Forsythe returns my phone calls or not; the first and only time he called me, I returned his phone call because I have class — I always return every telephone call. In fact, on my business card I have my direct phone number and I do answer my own telephone calls.
I don’t care if the councilmen, Anthony and Beers, are afraid of upsetting anyone that does not allow them to be in contact with the business that I so proudly founded and ran to the best of my abilities without any concern for monetary rewards.
As I have said before, Stavros Anthony was not allowed to spend any money with this newspaper despite the fact that he committed to it, but we supported him, endorsed him and were very happy for his reelection victory.
Michelle Fiore is a different story. I respect her loyalty to whomever; however, we at this newspaper and I personally believe she is the right person to represent the city’s Ward 6 because of her experience and dedication to the constituents of the entire State of Nevada, even if she is not allowed to acknowledge on her website or in her daily brief that she has been endorsed by this newspaper.
Anthony already won and no longer needs our help, but we are very proud of our support because, with or without his advertising, we believe he is the right person for the job and the city is well served with him as part of the city council.
Bob Beers is the most qualified person and we support him regardless who turns him against us. I am not in this business for fame, to win a popularity contest, or for the money; I am in this business to try to make this city like the old Las Vegas that welcomed me sixty years ago and I truly believe that Bob Beers is the right person to help me with that commitment.
My name is Rolando Larraz, and as always, I approved this column.
