Laws Oak Glen Coffee Shop became a part of the Oak Glen village, in California, since Alex and Teresa Law opened in 1953. Later their son Kent Colby and his wife Karen ran the coffee shop in 1972, for 42 years. The restaurant has to be good to last that long!
And now the new owner Denice Estrada promises not to change anything. “I will keep everything as close as possible to their ways.”
Today Oak is a village of only 300 people. Kent explained, “There were 75-100 people back at that time I first took over. “
Oak Glen is the center of farms harvesting apples, strawberries and other fruits. Thousands of visitors come to pick-their-own fruit, taste the apple cider, see the historical re-enactments and plays.
Denice feels, “The beautiful country and this amazing restaurant appealed to me. Their food is wonderful.”
I agree, “The BBQ chicken salad offered a tasty combination of jicama, black beans, corn, tomatoes on mixed greens. The hot spicy BBQ chicken went well with the salad, crunchy tortilla strips and soft avocado.
Their large spinach salad mixed the different flavors of cranberries, spicy pecans, and granny Smith Apples.”
Thinking of healthy food, nothing is fried in Law’s restaurant. They list 10 salads on their menu.
Denise mentioned, “We have a southwest roast beef sandwich with jack cheese and Ortega chilies on grilled sourdough bread.”
There’s Kent’s special recipe, “The meat loaf, served as a sandwich or meal, is all beef with extra spice and “stuff” in it. A lot of extras, that is what makes it special.”
They have hamburgers, chicken fried steak, around 19 sandwiches and four different tortilla wraps. Grilling the sandwiches offers another taste treat.
Don’t forget to try their famous apple cider, apples, preserves and exceptionally large hot apple pies.
A country breakfast buffet is served on the first Sunday of the month and holidays. Laws Coffee Shop is open until 4 PM with later hours for dinners on Fridays, in July, during apple season and holidays.
The original Laws Coffee Shop is located at 38392 Oak Glen Road, in Oak Glen, California, near Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs and a short drive from Las Vegas. For information, call (909)-797-1642.
