Skeptics, Atheists and Rationalists. Oh My: “The Amaz!ng Meeting (TAM)”
Part One of a Three Part Seri
TAM: Annual Meeting of Critical Thinkers — 15 years running — is an
opportunity to share skeptical theories and evidence about charlatans,
unfounded beliefs and nonsense.
In a several-day convention, Skeptics celebrate rational thinking,
science and evidence-based medicine and practices. Book sales,
lectures, debates, demonstrations, evening entertainments and an SRO
party-hardy “Bacon and Donut Celebration” — with Penn Jillette’s NoGod
Band thrilled and inspired two thousand people.
TAM! began with members of the JREF (James Randi Educational
Foundation) online forum, founded in 1996, to help people defend
themselves from paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.
JREF offers a still-unclaimed million-dollar reward for anyone who can
produce evidence of paranormal abilities under controlled conditions.
Through scholarships, workshops, and innovative resources for
educators, the JREF works to inspire this investigative spirit in a
new generation of critical thinkers.James Randi has an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, but today he is best known as the world’s most tireless
investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific
claims. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a
Fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and
a one-hour PBS NOVA special on Randi’s major investigations.
He is the author of numerous books, including: The Truth About Uri
Geller, The Faith Healers, Flim-Flam!, and An Encyclopedia of Claims,
Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural.
Randi’s lectures and television appearances continue to delight — and
vex — audiences around the world as they did in Las Vegas recently at
the sold-out TAM Convention at SouthPoint Casino.
I had an opportunity to meet Randi the “Sage” and found his quips and
twinkling eyes quite inspiring at 85! Attendees I spoke with were
indeed welcoming, bright, confident and willing to engage. Some JREF
detractors could benefit from these virtues.
(But, with all that free-thinking and bacon, they should probably
dance with more abandon!) I look forward to TAM-2014. For more
