changes his underwear; now he’s lying his way out of office.
Once he told the people in Clark County that the crime rate was down;
but later, when he was asking for more money, he said he needed more
money to hire more officers to cope with bringing the crime rate down.
When he wanted to tell the community that crime was down, he made a
big deal about it; but in reality he was — as always — lying.
Sheriff Douglas Gillespie keeps insisting the crime in Clark County is
way down, and every time he opens his mouth he likes to remind us that
he is “doing a good job as sheriff,” and of course that “crime is
down”; but when he wants to extort money from the taxpayers, he claims
that his hands are tied because he did not get the money he needs to
hire more police officers.
It really does not matter anymore because he already has given up on
his job because he doesn’t know how to do it and already has ruined
the reputation of the department with his bad behavior. But now he
wants to leave the job to his second-in-command, the one who stood
faithfully by his side, Assistant Sheriff Joe Lombardo.
Lombardo is, no doubt, the anointed one and is hoping that they can
fool the voters one more time; but as a citizen asked during a public
forum, if the crime rate is down, why is the population of the Clark
County Detention Center so crowded? Even Sheriff Gillespie’s newspaper
could not hide the fact that the crime rate had risen.
The Las Vegas Tribune once wrote that “Amongst all of the past and
present criminal cover-ups that have yet to be resolved, we can list:
the lies, disinformation, complete falsehoods, malicious prosecutions,
civil rights violations, wrongful terminations, criminal coercions,
nepotism, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit continual
criminal offenses, covered-up police employee domestic violence
offenses, covered-up police employee narcotics offenses, participation
in and conspiracy associated with the HOA Scandal, manipulation and
coercion of city and county business licenses, mishandling and
attorney collusion of worker’s compensation cases etc., etc.”
“The Sheriff cannot deny that he has been running this community with
an iron fist, making this community afraid of the police — creating a
police state similar to that in a country where even the dictator’s
own force of men and women are afraid of the retaliation if they speak
their mind,” the newspaper wrote a few months ago.
If Gillespie’s wishes to leave his second in command as the next
Sheriff comes to pass, the upper administration will not change at all
and the morale of the department will still be going down, the
reputation of the good officers will still be smeared, and the
community will continue to suffer.
The Clark County voters need to get the message loud and clear: This
newspaper is NOT antipolice; this newspaper is anti police corruption,
anti police abuse, anti police cover-up of their own domestic
violence, anti police use of drugs, anti police sexual assault and
anti police killing each other.
Former Deputy Chief John Sullivan, while running for Sheriff a few
years back, told the Las Vegas Tribune that the narcotic officers were
allowed to use drugs so as “not to blow their cover,” but never
explained why it is that they use the alleged same two kilos of
cocaine for everything they do, from entrapping citizens, for a police
undercover unit to be robbed, and in many other instances with the
same mobile reuse of those two kilos of cocaine, which by now may have
turned into pancake flour or baking powder.
The community of Clark County has to realize that the police are not
supposed to be above the law and that the police have to accept
responsibility for their actions the same way that those they arrest
have to, fair or not, justifiable or not.
The community of Clark County has to send the message loud and clear
to the Sheriff that Assistant Sheriff Joe Lombardo is NOT the right
man to bring up the morale and to reactivate respect for each other in
the department. What they need is to elect anyone else but Joe
If they don’t, they are going to pay the consequences of having the
same old regime, the same group of corrupted cops, running freely in
our city just like they claim the MOB was running freely in years past
— but then the safety of this community was secure in many ways.
