I interviewed Francois Michel, Vice President of the Geneva Lakes Region, of Switzerland, during our lunch at the Bouchon Restaurant, in the Venetian Resort.”
SZ: “How can visitors find those special places in your region?”
Francois: “We have get-always from major destinations and try to find off-the-beaten-track places. Look at our websites and call before you travel or visit the regional tourist offices in Switzerland. They will tell you their secrets. You can learn from them.
Don’t be shy, ask Swiss locals, they speak English and could provide tips about places-to-go around the country.
With today’s technology, you can visit your room and see what you are going to eat before you are there in another country. But you still need to surprise yourself. What better way than to ask locals for the best restaurants, the best winemaker, the hidden place for swimming on the lake.”
SZ: “What does your region offer for honeymooners and couples?”
Francois: “The Geneva Lakes Region is romantic. They can visit the UNESCO World Heritage wine region.
Visitors can meet the owner of these family-owned vineyards, he brings in two bottles of his wine, opens them and they can taste the wine.”
SZ: “Meeting the owners is more of an experience than just seeing the wineries.”
Francois: “Biking and hiking are fun activities and visitors can even go biking to the vineyards.”
SZ: “These inside tips make your vacation.”
Francois: “Our wine festivals and Montereau Jazz festivals are exciting events.
Around 10 years ago we found a soil that was great for truffles. Truffles grow only in the Geneva Lakes region, yes, we serve our fondue with truffles there.”
SZ: “That would be fun to go on a truffles hunt.”
Francois: “We arrange for visitors to join a truffles hunt in the fall. There is a truffle festival in October. When people think of truffles, they first think of Italy and France, but we have them too.
SZ: “Do you have unique settings for weddings?”
Francois: “We can arrange weddings in the chapel of the Savoy Castle in Chilton. Lord Byron wrote a poem about the castle.”
SZ: “There are also traditional weddings in a chalet in the mountains.
You mentioned, people can sky on a glacier. I have not heard of that before?”
Francois: “Yes, visitors can ski on a glacier beginning in November and the ski season.
We have excellent offers during the winter, children ski free until the age of 9 when they stay at resorts around the lake.
We try to make it affordable. Children learn how to ski while parents are off skiing
and wine tasting.”
SZ: “The Geneva Lakes Region has so much to do and to see!
