While the vote was underway in the Althing on recently, The Iceland Monitor reported, all three of the party’s members took the floor to say, “I am Charlie Hebdo.” After the bill was made law, the party said in a statement, “The Icelandic Parliament has issued the important message that freedom will not bow to bloody attacks.”
I am writing this piece on July 4, the commemoration day of our Independence, and I am sad to see that after so many years (239) of claiming that independence and bragging about leading the world in freedom of speech — defending the rights of people to freely express their opinions — this country seems to have forgotten all that.
Donald Trump is the only candidate running for president that has the courage to speak up loud and clear as to how he really feels and about what he really believes.
Donald Trump has come forward and says what the nation is thinking and the hypocrites in public office have thought, but do not have the courage to express out in the open.
Trump has said that the problem isn’t limited to Mexicans, that everybody entering the United States is not criminal or problematic, and that his concerns are rooted in national security.
Donald Trump has never said that all Mexicans (or all immigrants) are criminals; he was referring to the criminals that happen to be in this country illegally — not to those who come here to earn a decent living in an honest way and to raise their families.
Back in 1980, then President Jimmy Carter in conjunction with the Castro brothers opened the gates of the main prison in Cuba and those criminals were forced onto the same ships as decent families who were escaping the communist island.
Many of those arriving in the United States from the Mariel Port were criminals, but the majority were decent people running from a communist camp the size of the country.
Donald Trump was not referring to the Tony Badillos, the Escobedo Family, the Miguel Barrientos — all hard-working Mexicans that have been able to raise their families, create businesses and give their predecessors a good name — or to the many other Mexicans working in Las Vegas in the hotel-casinos industry, raising themselves up from the most humble positions to the top executives in management.
Every city in every state has just as many success stories from immigrants as they do from so-called natives of this nation.
The criminals of this country who are illegally here cannot be stopped from entering because they are already here, and they are from many different countries, and various nationalities. But those who are not here yet, they can be stopped if the voters of this country give Donald Trump the opportunity to build that infamous wall.
If we are not in the category that Donald Trump is referring to, we should not take offense to his words. I am an immigrant and I am not taking issue with or offense to Donald Trump’s speech because I have been working all my life since I got off a Pan-American Airlines flight with a passport and a visa attached to it.
Donald Trump has spoken for the majority of the citizens of the great nation that are seeing their country go down the drain.
Donald Trump has spoken for the citizens of this great country that are afraid that soon their country could be attacked by terrorists and other types of criminals, perhaps the very ones we let in or allowed to stay.
It is a fact that the borders have to be protected and secured for the safety of all of us who live in the country, regardless of the nation of origin, regardless of the color of the skin, regardless of the sexual preference, regardless of religious or political affiliation.
NBC and Univision, for example, have decided not to air theTrump-owned Miss Universe Pageant; Macy’s is dropping his signature clothing line; New York Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered a review of Trump’s city contracts, and NASCAR is moving an annual banquet from the Trump National Doral resort in Miami.
They are all wrong; NBC and Univision, owned by the same people, do not explain that they are two-in-one, so people could have the idea that there are two different television networks when in reality it is only one network; they have had business dealings with Donald Trump for years and now because they do not agree with what he said, they assume he is not good anymore.
The Macy’s stores situation is another case of unfairness’s to Donald Trump; where is their notion of freedom and their sense of free speech? What is it? that people can speak what they want as long as they have the approval of Macy’s stores?
New York Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered a review of Trump’s city contracts. Why? Because he is afraid that Donald Trump can be the candidate that destroys his party’s candidate in the general elections next year.
Donald Trump was good enough to obtain city contracts with the city of News York; and now, because the mayor pretends to disagree with Donald Trump’s opinion, he is not good enough for the city of New York any more? Doesn’t that sound kind of like a dictatorship?
Donald Trump must hold on to his ways because all those people who disagree with him today will be the first ones to be by his side the day after the election when he becomes the President of the United State of America.
Let’s be realistic: it’s time for a president that has the best interest of the country and its citizens at heart; it is time for a president that stops bowing and apologizing to everyone in the universe; it is time for a president that thinks first of all of the best for the United States of America.
I have mentioned this incident a few times and I will repeat it again — one Las Vegas Tribune reader complimented me every time we ran into each other until one day he disagreed with my opinion and almost insulted me by yelling that “no one reads your rag.” I responded, “You did; what made you change your mind about the Las Vegas Tribune? The differences of opinion? What happened to MY freedom of speech? What happened to MY right to my own opinion?”
The reason I started this newspaper after my retirement was because I believed that someone has to expose the corruption in the courts, the government and the law enforcement agencies.
The fact that the police department, the county and the city ignore this newspaper — despite the fact that they do read us every week — and discriminate against me personally because I don’t keep my mouth shut is a badge of honor for me.
Since I founded this small weekly newspaper I have been writing the truth and nothing but the truth; if I have not been writing the truth, why has no one asked us to correct what we publish?
For sixty years I have been interacting with governors, sheriffs, mayors, county commissioners, city councilman and judges at all levels of the judicial system; some of them are personal friends, most of them have been guests on my radio show, but none of them can say that they control me and they know that.
I have put my money where my mouth is and today, flat broke, I stand tall; proud that no one can accuse me of prostituting myself.
My name is Rolando Larraz and I am the Donald Trump of Las Vegas.
