Kuala Lumpur is a romantic city with several restaurants reaching high into the sky. My choice is the Restoran Nelayan, a floating restaurant built over Lake Titiwangsa. Nelayan is not like other floating restaurants. The open-air dining rooms were creatively designed in a circle with the lake running through in the center. It is like having your own private lake.
A wide bridge crossed from one side of the dining room to the other and becomes a stage at night. You have the lake around the outside of the restaurant, in front and behind the stage. I advise tourists to walk around and see the unique layout.
First I chose my meal from the Steamboat, Malaysian cuisine and Seafood dinners, or ala carte menu. After deciding to try the Steamboat meal, I walked over to the buffet tables to fill my plate with crab, prawns, chicken, fish, and an assortment of 30 different tasty Malaysian food items.
The Steamboat is a very large pot filled with broth. Each person drops the prawns, chicken or whatever they chose to eat into the broth. With a turn or two, the hot broth cooks our food within minutes. It is easy and fun to try the dipping sauces.
The Steamboat-style of cooking can be compared to Sukyaki or the shabu shabu hot pot. Whether you are on a health or weight reducing diet, everyone will find what they want here.
From our table, we looked out across the lake to the troupe performing their traditional dances on the stage. Like a window into their culture, the exotic movements of the ancient Siamese dances and their traditional costumes created the feeling that we were in another world. Nelayan is the perfect place to hold an unforgettable party, business conference and special occasions. With three air conditioned banquet rooms and large dining rooms,
Nelayan accommodates 2,000 people. In fact, the bridge is the focal point of the restaurant reserved for wedding ceremonies and their folklorico show.
This restaurant is more than a restaurant, it is an experience! They offer the traditional-style cuisine, tasty food and the Steamboat is fun for two or a few friends. Nelayan is great for families and business meetings.
The Restoran Nelayan is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. www.nelayan.com.my
