Mother’s Day Weekend Gets Colorful with Art Festival of Henderson
Mother’s Day weekend gets a pop of color when the City of Henderson hosts Art Festival of Henderson from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 13 and May 14 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St. Admission is free.
Many have made Art Festival of Henderson their Mother’s Day tradition. Thousands are expected to travel to Henderson to enjoy a weekend dedicated to the visual, performing, interactive and fine arts. Dozens of booths along Water Street will be selling artwork, with styles from mixed media to ceramics available for purchase.
The event also includes two stages of entertainment and a children’s Imagination Station, complete with art projects for the little Picassos and a chalk art competition. In fact, the city is seeking artists of all ages to participate in the chalk art contest.
Artists will have the opportunity to paint the plaza using chalk pastels. Individuals may select between three different square sizes. Each artist will be able to compete in one of three categories — youth (12 years and younger), teen (13 to 17 years old) and adult (18 years and older) — for a chance to win cash prizes, which are courtesy of several community partners.
Chalk art applications, with a sketch of the person’s artwork that will be featured at the event, are due May 8.

Caliber Collision Food Drive in Clark County Part of Nationwide Goal of 5 Million Meals for Children
Its ongoing commitment to fight childhood hunger, Caliber Collision is raising the bar with a goal to collect 5 million meals during its 6th Annual Restoration Food though May 19.
Locally in Las Vegas and Henderson, food and cash donations collected by Caliber’s 4 locations will benefit Three Square Food Bank.
As the largest collision repair company in the U.S., Caliber is partnering with its network of teammates, customers, business partners, schools and local communities to increase the number of meals collected in 2017 by 60 percent.
Caliber’s annual Food Drive is a grassroots effort driven by teammates nationwide who challenge each other in friendly competitions while hosting a wide variety of fun activities that engage and encourage their local communities to donate cash and food items.
According to Feeding America, while most kids and parents eagerly look forward to the end of the school year and vacation, nearly 18 million children in the U.S. who depend on school lunches will go hungry during the summer.
“With an army of 10,000 dedicated and passionate teammates across the country, we know we can make a significant impact on childhood hunger,” said Steve Grimshaw, Caliber Chief Executive Officer. “The continuing success of our Food Drive is a tribute to our teammates who are inspired to serve and our customers and partners, who generously support our efforts to restore the rhythm of regular meals during the summer months for kids in need.”
Grimshaw added that Caliber Collision has committed to a corporate matching contribution for local food banks based on the amount of cash donations and food items collected by Caliber teammates in each local community.
Collection centers are set up at each of Caliber’s 4 store locations for food and cash contributions. Donations can also be made online at CaliberDonations.com.

Be My Neighbor Day to Support Neighbors in Need with Daniel Tiger, June 10
Celebrate a beautiful day in the neighborhood with Daniel Tiger and all our friends for “Be My Neighbor Day” on Saturday, June 10 at the Windmill Library, 7060 W. Windmill Ln., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Together with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (LVCCLD) and the United Way of Southern Nevada, Vegas PBS is proud to announce an exclusive partnership with Vroom. This initiative is part of the Bezos Family Foundation and is committed to inspiring families to turn everyday moments into brain building moments to nurture children’s growing minds. Through Vroom and the Fred Rogers Company, Vegas PBS secured a grant to support this mission in Southern Nevada with Be My Neighbor Day.
“Do something nice for your neighbor, do something nice for your friend,” as we take this day to honor the life and legacy of Fred Rogers by participating in community-focused acts of kindness. “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” welcomes a new generation of children and families and will help guide Southern Nevadans on how to be a caring neighbor on Be My Neighbor Day. Community partners will lead several kindness activities including creating place mats for homebound seniors with Helping Hands of Las Vegas Valley, writing letters to veterans with US Vets and decorating lunch bags with the Ronald McDonald House for families receiving services. There also will be informational booths providing resources on how to be active in the community through Club Read with the LVCCLD, volunteerism with United Way, the summer food program with Three Square and much more!
Everyone is encouraged to bring a new or lightly used sweater to donate to our “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” Sweater Drive. Families and children will have the chance to meet Daniel Tiger and say “Ugga Mugga!” in the Story Room by pre-registering online. Neighbors can spend the day grooving to music with a DJ, enjoying a cool snack from the Kona Ice food truck, finding ways to engage digitally at the PBS KIDS mobile app station, and getting their faces painted.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County Fire Department will be on site sharing their part in being a good neighbor and giving tours of a police car and fire truck. McGruff from the Metro Volunteer Program will be on watch and ready to take photos with families.
