Slow to attribute credit; really quick to blame

    • April 23, 2018

Today many newspapers, writers, bloggers, radio show hosts and television personalities are willing and eager to claim ownership of being the “first one to endorse Trump,” but in reality it is not at all the truth. Look, for example, at Danny Tarkanian, who claims to have supported the Trump candidacy while his own wife was supporting Carly Fiorina, who was also running for president of the United States. Las Vegas Tribune was indeed the first newspaper to endorse Donald Trump for President;[…]

What shall it profit a man to own a newspaper?

    • April 22, 2018

The print edition of the Las Vegas newspaper direly warns that this country’s newspapers could become thinner or even disappear altogether because of tariffs as high as 32 percent being placed on newsprint imported from Canada. For some inexplicable reason the story cannot be found on the paper’s website, but has been replicated at the PressReader website. “It’s very possible that inadequate newsprint reserves will affect the page counts of the Review-Journal and perhaps that of our partner in the joint-operating agreement,[…]

    Census should ask about citizenship

    • April 22, 2018

Ignorance is not bliss. Eighteen states and the District of Columbia have sued in an effort to block the 2020 Census from asking about citizenship status, claiming the question will prompt illegal immigrants to not respond and thusresult in an undercount of population. That, they say, could result in the loss of congressional representation and federal funding for states, such as California, that have large immigrant populations. According to the 14th Amendment, “Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States[…]

Death of Attorney John Momot shocks the legal community

    • April 21, 2018

It may have been expected, but nevertheless the death of well known Las Vegas criminal defense attorney John Joseph Momot was a shock to his large number of colleagues, clients and friends.  Thispopular defense attorney had developed a reputation like none other throughout the years. Momot had been ill for some time, but even with his green oxygen tank, his impeccable dress and amicable self, always well respected, was seen daily at the Regional Justice Center, serving and protecting his clients. He[…]

Nevada court rightly upholds the public has right to know

    • April 18, 2018

The Nevada Supreme Court has made it clear that public officials cannot skirt the state public records law by using privately owned electronic devices to conduct the public’s business. This past week the court unanimously overturned a lower court ruling that rejected a request for records from Lyon County commissioners because those records were not stored on devices owned by the county. The county conceded that public business was indeed conducted using personal phones and email addresses. The county website[…]

Marco Rubio: Giving praise where praise is due

      • April 23, 2018

I am a strong believer in criticizing where criticism is due, and praising where that is warranted, as well. If we are quick to criticize people for their bad actions, we should also be just as quick to praise them when they do something good. Some time ago we called Senator Marco Rubio’s office in Florida to request an interview with him when he was running for president, for the simple reason that we knew his late father and believed[…]

What is wrong with people nowadays?

      • April 22, 2018

What is wrong with people nowadays? They become well known from one day to the next, and then they think their opinion is the most important thing the world needs to hear and that they are going to change everything and/or everyone. Before any of those people who adore blasting me, criticizing me, and finding more things to complain about regarding me, start up again, I have to make the disclaimer that I am very well aware that this week’s comments[…]

The Las Vegas Tribune reaches voters who vote

      • April 18, 2018

It’s stupid that both Democrats and Republicans have tossed the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s new political reporter, Ramona Giwargis, out of two events she went to cover. How dumb or cowardly are these people who kick the press out? The losers are the readers. Once again we have to make sure that a disclaimer is clearly posted in this very important voice of our newspaper: We do not like Senator Dean Heller; we have not endorsed, and never will endorse, Senator Dean[…]

FBI raid on Cohen ‘a disgrace’

      • April 14, 2018

By Jordan Fabian The Hill President Trump on Monday blasted the FBI for raiding the office of his personal attorney Michael Cohen, calling it a “disgrace” and a “pure and simple witch hunt.” “It’s a real disgrace,” Trump told reporters at the White House as Vice President Pence, national security adviser John Bolton and other officials looked on. “It’s an attack on our country in a true sense. It’s an attack on what we all stand for.” The president spoke[…]

I did not hesitate. I asked for Valley Hospital.

      • April 13, 2018

It was over a decade ago when I was admitted to Valley Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in our city; back then everything, including Valley Hospital, was old — so old that on the door of every patient’s room was a sign reminding visitors not to smoke in the room. Everyone asked me the same question about my choice of hospital, and I repeated the same thing to everyone who came to see me: the hospital may be old,[…]

Martin Luther King, Jr. 50 years—not forgotten

      • April 7, 2018

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an amazing man. He is definitely one of our heroes, and if everyone who heard him speak, listened, whether to one of his speeches, face to face, or even “heard” him through his quoted words, the things he had to say were strong enough to change a life, shape a life, and create a decent and loving human being — if taken to heart. We can let his own words speak for him, and while[…]
