THE KANGAROO COURT AT FESTIVAL
“Kangaroo Court,” the new video from Capital Cities, premieres today
on VEVO. The clip, which can be seen was co-directed by Carlos Lopez
Estrada (Passion Pit, Goo Goo Dolls, Jesse & Joy) and Capital Cities’
own Sebu Simonian and Ryan Merchant. It features guest stars Darren
Criss (“Glee”) and Shannon Woodward (“Raising Hope”).
The video takes the concept of a kangaroo court — a mock trial wherein
the outcome is pre-determined and the defendant has typically been
found guilty before the proceedings even begin — to the animal
kingdom, where, as it turns out, creatures aren’t exactly tolerant
either. The premise gave everyone a good excuse to don elaborate
prosthetics and patronize a trendy club called The Kangaroo Court,
where club owner Criss has a strict no-zebras policy — which is
unfortunate for Merchant, since he plays a zebra.
“I’ve been a big Capital Cities fan for awhile. They asked me to be a
part of this video and I was like ‘hell, yeah, man,’” says Darren
Criss, who plays the high-rolling bulldog that runs the club. “When
you’re working on a show like ‘Glee,’ you have lot of different crazy
costumes and wardrobe and a lot of makeup things every now and then. I
myself haven’t had any prosthetic animal make-up before. I’m really
excited about it — I don’t even want to take it off. I’m gonna leave
it on and go for a drive later and see what happens.”
Capital Cities will perform on “Ellen” on October 1 and kick off the
“Bright Futures Tour” with Fitz and The Tantrums on October 20.
Tickets are on sale now for the co-headlining run, which will include
shows at Roseland Ballroom in New York City (October 23) and
Washington, DC’s 9:30 Club (October 30 & 31st).
Billboard praised “Kangaroo Court” as a “summer jam if we’ve ever
heard one” and the track has already been added by such modern rock
stations such as KROQ and 98/7 in Los Angeles and Live105 in San
Francisco. It’s the second single off Capital Cities’ debut album, In
A Tidal Wave Of Mystery (Capitol Records/Lazy Hooks). “Safe and
Sound,” the first single, hit No. 1 at Modern Rock radio and is now a
multi-format smash. It’s currently Top 5 — and building — at the Pop,
Hot AC, Triple A and Modern Rock formats. “Safe and Sound” has been
certified Platinum in the United States (where it’s sold 1.3 million
singles), Germany and Canada and has gone Gold in Italy, Mexico,
Austria and Switzerland.
The “Safe and Sound” video — which has more than 16 million views —
won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Visual Effects. Directed by
Grady Hall (Beck, Modest Mouse), the clip features a mash-up of the
past 100 years of dance, presided over by Capital Cities front men
Merchant and Simonian. The pair learned lots of new moves from famed
choreographer Mandy Moore on the shoot. Fans can get in the swing of
things, too, with these fun dance tutorials, which are now live on
YouTube channel DanceOn! Kangaroo Court appears October 27 and 28, at
the Life is Beautiful Festival.

HA HA TONKA AT LVCS
Ha Ha Tonka is an unmistakable indie-meets-Southern rock band
comprised of Brett Anderson, Lennon Bone, Lucas Long and Brian
Roberts. Sitting at the crossroads of Americana and indie- where
Alabama meets Arcade Fire- the quartet are primed for the release of
their highly anticipated fourth full-length album, Lessons, on
September 24th via Bloodshot Records. Previously revealed album track
“Colorful Kids” is both bright and melancholy, the upbeat melodies
belie its darker subject matter.
Today the band shares a second taste of Lessons, revealing the title track with ELLE.
A bittersweet cut filled with buzzy, distorted electric guitar that perhaps carries the
message of the album truest to form, check out the “Lessons” stream
HERE for posting. Ha Ha Tonka will take to the road this fall on a
full North American tour. Be sure to catch their captivating live show
in your city! For more information on Ha Ha Tonka, give
firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com a shout! Ha Ha Tonka will appear
on October 2, at the LVCS.
